First Light in Athens

There are only a few things that can get me out of bed before dawn:

• Basketball

• Photography

• Travel

• Really good friends (emphasis on really)

• And, of course, a sunrise

This morning, I managed to check off three of those: sunrise, photography, and travel—all in one. Not many others had the same idea, the streets were quiet and peaceful. It seems like people in Greece enjoy sleeping in… but then again, I’ve only been here for 12 hours, so I could definitely be wrong. But one thing’s for sure—this city knows how to deliver when it comes to natural beauty.

Photography in a city like Athens is a treat.

First things first…. Let’s talk about the Acropolis. Just wow. I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact it was built in the 5th century BC. My morning sunrise walk would have been the perfect time to go up, before the heat catches you. But I did not. Instead I found some lovely views looking up to the Acropolis so I could capture the first sun hitting it.

I attempted to photograph it with my 24-70mm Sony G Master lens, and quickly gave up. The immediate switch up to my 70-200m was needed… the extra zoom was greatly appreciated. I would recommend any photographer going to Athens- if you’re wanting to capture details and the grandeur of this historic place, zoom lens will be your best friend for your travel photography.

Some Athens travel tips for photographers:

  • Athens gets very HOT, and humid. Walking around during the day can get exhausting,so  earlier in the day is the best time if you want to get around on foot to avoid the heat (and potentially crowds).

  • Yes, yes, yes I know… the 70-200m camera lens is so heavy in your bag, and not always the most ideal for your travelling camera gear. But here me out, if you are willing to make that small sacrifice- you will be pleasantly surprised. I don’t always bring my 70-200m lens with me-especially if I'm travelling and doing a lot of walking. However I will for specific cities, and it is safe to say it was PERFECT for Athens.

Photography & Camera Setting Tips

  • Camera: Sony A7iii (mirrorless)

  • Camera Lens: Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 G-Master OSS

  • In camera settings: manual (I play around with my aperture, shutter speed and ISO on the go depending on what I am shooting, and how the natural light is)

  • Editing: All photos have undergone minimal white balance and exposure edits in Lightroom. as Athens’ natural beauty hardly needs any additional post-processing. In hopes the images can portray the mood and atmosphere of how I experienced it.

Whether you’re a traveller, a photography enthusiast, a fellow basketball supporter following my journey or just someone who appreciates a good sunrise walk, I hope these photos bring you a little piece of Athens’ magic.
