Sydney Kings vs. Brisbane Bullets,
Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney - 12th November 23'
A WNBL and NBL doubleheader at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney made for a great Sunday. Playing in the first game and then photographing the second. A huge thank you to the Sydney Kings crew, especially Tolly (Sam Tolhurst - photographer / videographer for the Sydney Flame & Kings) for making it possible. I’ve always admired Tolly’s work in the professional sports photography world, and heard nothing but positive things about him as a person. After meeting him, I can say he lives up to the word. (Do yourself the favour and check out his work: @_tollywood: One of the best in the business.)
After finishing my game with the Melbourne Boomers (vs. Sydney Flames), I went to the locker room for a quick shower, grabbed my camera gear, and headed back out to the court. Tolly welcomed me, handed me an NBL photographer’s vest, and showed me around the place to some of the best photography spots in the arena. My personal favourite was the birds-eye view down to the court. While court-side was great to be up close and personal with the game, the bird’s-eye view added a different dimension and perspective to the shots which I enjoyed.
Had a blast. The King’s culture felt special. Even though it was my first time meeting the crew - it felt like a very warm and welcoming environment regardless of it being my first time shooting an NBL game. Plus, a bonus, got some great shots out there too.
Camera Gear & Tips for Basketball Photography:
• Camera: Sony a7iii (mirrorless)
• Lenses: Sony FE 70-200m GM OSS (borrowing from my friend Adam McKay until I get my own), Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, and Sony GM 24mm f/1.4
• Edits: Program: Adobe Lightroom. Manually played around with white balance and slight colour adjustments to make the colours pop a little bit more. No crazy edits - apart from some of the black and white shots!
• Condense your gear: Photographers can’t bring camera bags into the arena, so keep it light. Jeans with big pockets will be your best friend for holding extra gear. (Bonus points if you can fit snacks in them too.)
• Find unique perspectives: Explore different angles if you want more diversity in your sports photography portfolio, which can ultimately add to your ability to tell a story or capture an experience.
• Show some love to the crowd! The Sydney King's supporters are famously known as the purple army. The 'sea of purple' creates a special atmosphere at Qudos Bank Arena for the team. Basketball is more than a game.
As I said, may the sports photography endeavors continue. Until next time!
