What's the Best Time of Day to Take a Photo?

Power of Light - Folegandros, Greece

Grateful to be in a very beautiful part of the world… a small Greek Island called Folegandros. The perfect spot to help me portray the power of light and show what the best time of day to take a photo is. Two photos taken with the same camera, from the same spot. Only difference is the time of day I took them. I haven’t applied any edits or post-processing.

As you can see, the natural light alone can dramatically alter the mood and feel of a photograph. Whether you’re drawn to the more dramatic harsh sun and shadow, or the calm, softer colours- understanding how light impacts your photos can elevate your storytelling. For natural light and travel photographers, understanding this is even more crucial. Without the convenience of external lighting gear in your camera bag, knowing how to use natural light can be a handy tool.

Take these two images above- you may think the image on the left is the later in the day as it seems darker, but it is actually the opposite. This photo was taken at midday. The image on the right is while the sun is about to set, even though the light looks stronger and harsher (7pm). This is because the cliff is facing West, where the sun sets. During the earlier part of the day this cliff face sees no sun because it is rising in the East.

As you can see, knowing where the sun is at certain times of the day can help you! If you have a specific photoshoot or vision in mind- think about what time of day can help you create the light you want to create. Being intentional about this can significantly change the look of a photo and help you create the desired style and aesthetic.

Be Intentional

When deliberating about when is the best time of the day to take a photo, you should try and have a specific photoshoot or vision in mind. Think about the mood you want to create, and what time of day can help that. Being intentional about this can significantly change the look of a photo and help you create the desired style and aesthetic.

My photography tip for all kinds of photographers, or specifically those who are using natural light- next time you’re out shooting, plan around the light - as it can be the key to bringing your creative vision to life. (There are even some apps out there that can help you with more precise light information!). Happy shooting!

Photography & Camera Setting Tips

  • Camera: Sony A7iii (mirrorless)

  • Camera Lens: Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 G-Master

  • In camera settings: manual (I play around with my aperture, shutter speed and ISO on the go depending on what I am shooting, and how the natural light is behaving)

Editing: All photos have undergone no edits in Lightroom. To truly showcase how the light impacts the image, no cheating here! Just all natural light!
