Where to Go in Milos, Greece: A Photo Journal

Updated: 1 day ago

Milos Island, is a gem of the Cyclades islands in Greece. It has become quite popular in the past couple of years for its unique beaches and landscapes, as well as its small fishing villages by the water.

Because I loved my time very much, and did quite a bit of research before my trip to make sure I hit the best spots... I have put together some travel tips and must-see-spots to hopefully help inspire your holiday to the Greek Islands!!

Three things to note before getting stuck into it:

  • I am a photographer, not a writer, so I hope the images can do a lot of the talking

  • Images have been taken on both film and digital/mirrorless cameras (Film - Ilford Sprite 35-II and Canon Prima Zoom 70F using Portra 160/Kodak 400 ) (Digital- Sony a7iii / Sony GM 24-70m)

  • These photos have not undergone much editing- only minor light adjustments (I do not want to catfish)

Adamantas

Starting in Adamantas. This is port city where all ferries dock, making it a popular base for travellers exploring the island. Adamantas also has beautiful waterfront restaurants, and lots of cats.

My personal favourite restaurant was Nostos Seafood Experience. Lovely service and food while I watched the sun go down. It was an experience in itself watching the workers cross the busy road from the restaurant/kitchen with all the food/drinks out to the dining section by the water. I even made a TikTok about it (here).

I stayed at Ippocapus Studios, a quiet retreat just a 10–15 minute walk from the ferry terminal. I enjoyed the peace and quiet off the main area in Adamantas, where it felt qiuiet busy with all of the ATVs driving around. The studios were also newly renovated and they offered the BEST buffer breakfast wow.

Day on the Water

If you’re wanting beaches surrounded by cliffs and unique rock formations with crystal-clear waters, a yacht trip is the way to go. I joined Horizon Yachts Milos for a day trip and we travelled along the south of the island to the beaches only accessible via boat- Kalogries, Kleftiko, and Gerakas. (All yacht companies operate out of Adamantas)

Explore the Island by Car or ATV

Renting a car or ATV is needed if you want to properly explore Milos.

Here’s a glimpse of the must-visit spots:

Sarakiniko (also known as Moon Beach):

This unique lunar landscape is UNREAL, especially for sunrise... also a photographer's dream. I didn't visit during the day- as I was told its extremely busy, and I wanted to roast at a more quiet beach. Hence- sunrise was a great option for me, and my camera. While it’s famous for the cliff jumping, because of the strong winds and choppy waters that day- it was too dangerous for anyone… despite realllllly wanting to (me). If cliff jumping is something you’d want to do if visiting (me)… make sure you check the wind conditions around the island before arriving (not me).

Fyropotamos:

A peaceful and tucked-away village by the water. If I was to return to Milos for another holiday…. I’d stay here.

Klima:

A charming fishing village with colourful houses along the water. (Be prepared for a steep descent by car or ATV)

Plaka:

The old town on the island’s highest point. Filled with quiet narrow paths with whitewashed walls, stones and bougainvillea flowers… the classic Greek style streets - another photographer's dream. Boutique shops and restaurants all around the place.

Because we were up so high I thought there would be more views of the water, but I guess I needed to look a little harder, or climb a little higher like up to the church on the hill.

At this point of the day- lunch time- all I wanted was a refreshing Greek Island & an ice latte, and then to roast at a beach for 4 hours. So I drove to Pathiena which wasn’t too far.

Plathiena Beach

My favorite beach on Milos! With sunbeds, a bar/restaurant, and space to lay just on the sand. I really liked it because it offered something for everyone.

Papafragas Caves

Impressive rock formations created a unique inlet. Unfortunately, trash often washes ashore here, so it’s better for photos than too much swimming.

Mandrakia

The best spot for dinner and sunset, especially at Medusa Restaurant. It is a popular restaurant- as many people suggested it to me, so make sure to arrive early to join the waitlist- especially if you have a group. As a solo traveler, I lucked out with an immediate table - yeeeeeeeeeew,. Plus... some more adorable fishing huts by the water, with breathtaking cliff views.

Tips for Your Visit to Milos, Greece

1. Choose Your Base Wisely: Adamantas is convenient- for day adventure day trips around the island or boat tours. But for a quieter atmosphere by the water, consider staying in smaller villages like Fyropotamos or Mandrakia.

2. Book Rentals in Advance: Summer gets busy, so reserve your car or ATV ahead of time. I opted for a car, which felt safer on the busy roads and provided plenty of storage space, plus air conditioner which was greatly appreciated in the middle of August.

3. Watch the Winds: Beach conditions vary with the wind, so check with locals or yacht/excursion tour operators in Adamantas for the best spots each day.(Especially if you want to go cliff jumping at the popular moon beach).

4. Dining Recommendations: Don’t miss these highly recommended spots, because I sadly did miss these ones...

  • Sirocco Volcanic All Day Restaurant (South East)

  • Barriello (Trypiti)

  • Ergina (Εστιατόριο Εργινα) (Plaka)

  • Mouratos Bakery (Stop for the road... North of Adamantas)

However I didn't miss these ones....!!!

  1. A spot I sadly missed is Kimolos!! A few people recommended this to me- apparently it is stunning. To get there you'll need to jump on a boat from Pollonia- perhaps it is a half day or day trip. Some of the boat trips go here, but the specific route/company I went with explored the south of the island whereas, Kimolos is an island off the North-West of mainland Milos.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Milos is only one of the two Greek Islands I have visited, I would say it was a lot more busy than the peaceful Folegandros Island. But then a lot more quiet than the most popular destinations like Santorini.

So whether you want to have an action packed- adventurous holiday, or a more quiet relaxing one- I am sure you’ll be able to find what you need on Milos.

Thanks for sticking with me through these travel tips and my photo journal !!!!!

Much love mwahhhhhh

(P.S I'll be writing another blog about my favourite Greek Island- Folegandros, soon)
